SKEETS GARFUNKEL FRIEDKIN..my last day of watching a creation take hold. JULY 26

When you finally get to see all my photos there will be one of the finish hug between Lena and Mark and that should tell you all the feeling of appreciation and love for each.

SKEETS GARFUNKEL FRIEDKIN..my last day of watching a creation take hold. JULY 26 Saturday

The day was incredible!  I had been graciously invited to the baby shower for Rachel, Medoffs' daughter who is expecting in 2 weeks , a third boy.  Stephanie picked me up and while on the way she gave me the tour of the older areas that were once the stationary avenues of shopping and every day chores. Many in this area have succumbed to progress and malls and universal stores.  I saw developments and empty streets waiting to be newly developed.  The color was basically light brown or beige and many areas reminded me of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The young women at the shower were mostly professional and mothers.  What a difference since Stephanie and I were young.  The had a common bond and laughter and lightheartedness prevailed. Home made food and smiles filled the home of a friend and I saw Rachel's quick wit and magnanimous smile especially when she opened box after box of photos of Oleander bushes which were gifts from her family and me, a new aunt.

Our return to Mesilla and the film set was detoured again with further sight seeing but not for long.   The set was at a old home 1874 and beautiful courtyard within thick adobe walls and large trees filled with character.  If they could only talk and share the human history that occurred during their life times.!!
They were wrapping up the engagement party when I arrived and then it was lunch break  (PM). The clouds were forming northwest of us and looked like there might be a storm . Hopes were still high to start the last scene in time.  There is a set director ( sculpture) ,Steve, and it is really enchanting to watch the set being created to the last detail, candles lit, leftover food, poured wine, askewed dishes , crumbs and napkins, and chocolate covered strawberries.  He is quite the master!

Lena the only actor in the visual take had 8 PAGES of dialogue and acting to do during this take with Chris and Linda off camera doing cross dialogue in phone conversations.  The eye doesn't always see what the truth is...Lena (Helen) is a consummate trooper doing her scene before ,during and after a thunder storm hits us;  even after the red wine spills on her gorgeous cocktail dress for the take of which there is only one.( dress I mean). It has become a night of Murphy's Law but faith and determination hold out and the end is miraculous  as are all the cast and crew.  I watched Medoff as I now will call him as it seems that Garfunkel is now my new nomenclature. He managed his anxiety buy taking out  his tiny I pod and ear phones and sat on the wrought iron lounge and listened to I don't know what but I think it was a recurring love song.   The shoot was over successfully at 10:30 and in the dark Linda Hamilton and I walked down the block ,across the street and up to our rooms at Meson D' Mesilla. Certainly, alls well that ends well.

Couldn't find my outdoor key to my room so we entered through Linda's and soon behind us came Lena and Chris who didn't have keys either.  Surprised when Linda showed what she had purchased that day from a local store,...the funniest and amusing small creatures to attach to whatever .  We laughed and then with a gentle smile Linda put the cutest one in my purse and we hugged. I can not properly express the fondness I have for this cast of characters, but I want them all to know that my life is forever enriched by them.

Sleep cam easily for my heart was full.

Stay tuned for my last night and trip home, if you want to.

JULY 27 SUNDAY,  JULY 28, JULY 29

Today is a day off for cast and crew and me. Beautiful clear warm day as I look outside , dress and go down for breakfast.  Feeling very different I put on a long dress and T shirt similar to the one Linda wore the other day...a new look for me!  Begin to gather memorabilia to the suitcase and partially pack as I will be leaving this experience tomorrow.

The historic section of Mesilla is just blocks away and I take this time to stroll into the historic district passing La Posta Restaurant, El Patio, Double Eagle, the church, the Plaza and gazebo while stopping at welcoming stores along the way. The pecans are grown here so I must buy some to take home at Stahmanns.  At the Billy the Kid store I buy suede chaps for my grandson Jake, a silver buckle for my daughter's birthday and earrings for a granddaughter.  At Lulu's I buy a special mirror for myself.  The leather goods are lovely and I have to have a remembrance so leather card holders for me and others and a hand made pocket knife for my son.

Lunch at La Posta to return to my first nights eating with Mark, Steve , Toni, and JD.  The room is delightful with its mache' figures hanging from above and the colorful appointments all around. Quesadillas for me and a glass of beer to top off the special day and to get in preparation for the Celebrity Bartending evening to be held at my small B&B.  The temperature has heated up when I go outside so I walk leisurely back to the hotel while looking over at the horizon and loving the mountain site and cloud formations.

My room now has a large Jacuzzi tub in the middle of my room and looking so inviting I plan to use it to soak out the heat and fatigue in preparation for tonight's event and farewell to all the cast and crew and new friends that will attend.

With camera, T shirt for signing and smile ready I enter the barroom at 5:30. A country band is playing , people are drinking and laughing and cheerfulness abides. Tonight stars, Linda Hamilton, Chris Payne Gilbert and Lena Georgas are behind the bars . The spirit is high and intense. Last week when Chris McDonald bartended he prepared a Car Bomb for me so this week I asked Lena to fix a cosmo .  She asked the experienced bt helping how to and gave me 2 perfect pink cosmos to which I have proof in my camera. She and Chris were vying for the biggest tips and the container was being filled constantly.  People were enjoying and the noise level was 10.  I had placed my T-shirt on a table in front of the band and Lara Immerman Myrene was holding watch to make sure all those who could would sign my shirt, which by the way is now hanging from a hanger in my living room.  Mark's girls have a special charity that was included so I handed a special check to Deborah  and thanked her for just being her.

Linda was in another area serving soft drinks and selling kisses ...the lines were long and excitement filled the room...some of the women were waiting for her while sitting at the front bar but since Linda does not drink she chose to be in the non alcoholic area.  I told the ladies where she  had been all evening at which point they made dashes for the other room.  Linda is a graceful and warm woman and welcomed each man and woman with special affection.  I took many pictures in that room too. At 7:30 when we all could not stand any longer nor remain in high volume and the duty of the celebs was over, each of us went off to find some peace.  I went to dinner with Ginger ,Lara,J.D to La Casa across the street where we met up with Mark,Stephanie, Debra and Rachel.  Fun to recount all our experiences the past 10 days and say good byes to fast friends . With heavy heart and final hugs to Mark and family,,I was now exoffio member of the Medoff clan.

Walking back to Meson d mesilla I spotted Linda overlooking the balcony of her room and shouted up.  She was dining with Jessica and friends so up I went for final good byes. It was now 10 and Linda had a film call the next morning at 6 and pages of script to review so after 30 minutes we hugged and she invited me to come and stay with her in Malibu sometime... That will be another story! One last bath in my Jacuzzi , finish packing, review my day, one last short walk around the lookout on top of the building at the stars and mountains and slip into my high bed.

Lara Myrene is taking me and Lena to the El Paso Airport for our flights. Lena has chosen to leave earlier with me for her flight is later than mine . We enjoy sharing our thoughts and Lena signs my T shirt with a very sensitive phrase...we came together and we leave together thus friends forever.  Sounds so good to me and only we can make that happen.  Lara has been available for me all the time I have been in Las Cruces so for that and many other reasons I wanted to personally thank her.  There has not been One person among the cast crew or new acquaintances who not shown sincere kindness. For that I say thank you so very much and thanks for the film life to be continued.

This is my life and I claim it with a whole heart....keep posted if you care to.

SUNDAY, JULY 26: HELEN.

SUNDAY, JULY 26:  HELEN.

During lunch -- at 7 PM this Sunday -- the sky turns black.  We're supposed to shoot outside on a patio decorated for Darryl and Helen's engagement party.  Production Designer Stephen Hansen has strung $300 worth of lighted lanterns that Ginger schlepped from LA.  Rueben has lit it to take maximum advantage of Stephen's set -- the aftermath of the engagement party that wasn't.  Helen sits alone with a few unfinished glasses of wine and a couple of chocolate strawberries.  We get one take on a wide lens, decide to get one on a tighter lens, just in case we get rained out.

It begins to rain in the middle of the scene; not hard, so we finish the take.  Then take cover, grips and camera crew scrambling to protect the equipment.

Could move Helen's scene inside:  She stares out at the ruin of the party Darryl missed.  Did he run off with another woman?  He says he was kidnapped.  I wonder, in passing, other than the movies, who, really, gets kidnapped on the day of his engagement party?

Wait -- this is a movie.

Lena sits in the house.  I rehearse with her alone, then with her and Chris; then they rehearse while I go to talk with Ginger, Laura, and Reuben about a deadline to decide to change the shot.  We decide to wait until 10:30.

Lena did the scene today where Helen arrives home, multi-tasking.
She's talking to her boss, the District Attorney, on the phone as she hauls her jacket and briefcase, takes off her shoes, enters the house, tears down a note from Darryl telling her not to mess up the bathroom, takes off her shirt as she enters the kitchen, gets a carrot, checks out the living room as she takes off her pants, re-fluffs one pillow Darryl had previously fluffed, hopping one footed across the hallway in the middle of the house (to which we have dollied after her), does a jeté back into the hallway, still on her phone, putting on a shower cap, finishes the call, receives another, and launches a jeté back into the bedroom.

Funny and wonderful.

10:30.  The trees in the courtyard are dripping a little but the rain has stopped.  We shoot Helen's phone call to Darryl, with Amelia interrupting, cautioning, and threatening on Darryl's end while a cop pursues them (unknown to Helen on her patio).  Two takes on two lenses and I tell Lena, "That's as good as anything needs to be."

Before I call cut on one take, I am moved by the surroundings and the assemblage to ask everyone to take a moment to look at how beautiful it all looks, here in this moment on Earth.

SUNDAY MORNING EARLY JULY
This is another interrupted night of sleep!! Moved my room yesterday since the B&B was full with previous reservations and  since I extended my stay. Maybe a case of getting comfy in the new room.
Now I will try to catch you up on the last 3 days. Glorious sky and temperature..blue and 90's.

ON THURSDAY--Pepper is the union director of makeup on the set and a woman with a big heart and smile.  She was making up Linda when I entered the room and we greeted each other with big hellos and smiles.  There is a certain degree of openness with women  and we found ourselves sharing ideas and experiences.  A common thread certainly runs through us which enables the feeling and truths to come forward. Women hood forever !

I have often said "I wish I was a fly on the wall" and I am sure many have wished the same. Well being here and on the site has very often given me that feeling.   There was a scene between Amelia and Darryl and Lena today that exposed the heart not only to the camera but to those who watched and listened.   I was a fly today !!!

The production is low budget and has had the luck of locals participating as extras.  About 40 filled Mark's living room for the political fundraiser event and the shot went quickly and so professionally.  Reminded me of the many I had in reality at my home.

Ginger's husband Bill Immerman came to visit and help on some issues.  There is definitely less than 6 degrees of separation in this experience.  Our conversations brought us to common experiences and people.
I marvel at the calmness of the director ,our classmate, and the intense concentration of him, Linda Medina the Asst. Director and the Photographer, Reuben. There is dignity and respect for each other ...it is very noticeable.

Dinner was at the house and Stephanie and Mark's daughter Debra  made Spaghetti  dinner . I have met the grandchildren and enjoyed being a quasi grandmother.  I did regress today as I climbed the trampoline and did a few seat flips and then swung high on the swing.  Reminiscent of my days in Youngstown in my back yard with my kids.

ON FRIDAY JULY 24

Made my reservation to go home to Boca so I now have 4 more days of New Mexico and 3 more days of filming. Mark wants to know if I plan to stay until Xmas !  Monday is a day off for the crew and cast.  The scene is in the bus set on Mark's property, an old GMC loaned by a friend also.
Confrontation from all 3 leads today per the script. A hot and sticky day.
Talking to leads Linda and Chris, I announced that I had made my plans and unsolicited and simultaneously they said " oh no Skeets, you can't go .  Your good energy is needed on the set and you have to stay until we finish ."  Wow!  Talk about a boost of Ego. Nevertheless, my plans are made and I intend to leave some of my energy behind; for good luck that is.

An invite from Ginger to join her and her family Bill, Laura and Scott for dinner at the Double Eagle gave me a few minutes get back to hotel, shower , change and join them before the restaurant closed.   Having no car , I have been so well cared for by all.  I am so lucky to be accepted in such a casual and sincere fashion.

ON SATURDAY JULY 25

When I got to location at Marks next door neighbors Pecan orchard, the filming was not  yet ready as crew was scurrying around with lighting and scene sets.  I was invited to join Bill, Ginger's husband, Lara and Scott to drive to White Sands Monument and the Space Museum  in Alamogordo. So glad I did.  I am enthralled with the mountains and the shadows thrown on them . The museum was very interesting and I really like peaking my memory as to where  I was when the space events took place.  There was a guide who had been a frog man on many of the capsules which landed in the sea and he was responsible for the safe escape of the spacemen.
The piece d' resistance was the white gypsum dunes at white sands.  Incredible!!!  We arrived back in town around 6:15 in time to relax  before some of the final scenes of the film were shot.  These were some of the heavy emotional parts of the film and in fact the crew was extricated from the site except for camera and sound and director since it was filled with high interpersonal relationships, in other words, a semi love scene. Darkness on the set and all of us swatting the mosquitos.  This was an evening shoot and lasted until after midnight.

Well, think I have caught you up to date.  Stay tuned if you care to.
